Best of Friends

Well to say that Kaylee's year did not go as planned would be the understatement of the year. Through it all these are some of the girls who made being homebound not so bad. These girls came by to visit with goodies, texted her words of encouragement and continued to love on her as only a dear friend can. These faces have won my heart forever!
Since Kaylee could not participate in any end of year activities at school one of Kaylee's best friends Maddie along with one of my dearest friends and her mom, Marci threw her a dinner at the country club. It was a huge surprise to Kaylee and it was so good to see her laugh and smile with friends outside of our home. Even costochondritis will not keep this girl down.

Kaylee finished the year with Outstanding Citizenship, A Honor Roll and Academic Excellence all while spending every day in pain with little sleep. God has great things in store for this girl. There is nothing she cannot do!

Intermediate Awards Assembly

Well another school year has come to a close with the annual Awards Assembly for the Intermediate School. Campbell worked so hard this school year, especially in Math and Reading. She has blossomed into quite the bookworm and as a former teacher and lover of books I could not be more excited. Of course, her Dad is thrilled that she found her love of Math again and was so determined to  do her best that she would even willingly go to her teacher before school on the mornings she was unsure about a previous night's assignment.
Here she is getting her medal for Academic Excellence.
In this picture she is getting a certificate for maintaining an A-B honor roll for the year.
We are so proud of Campbell's accomplishments this year but more than anything we are proud of the person of character that she is to others. I love this sweet girl and cannot wait to see what all the Lord has in store for her future.

Costochondritis...What???

One day...that is all it takes for a perfectly healthy, happy, 7th grade girl to go from this...
 To this...
To this.

On February 2nd, Kaylee played her last Wylie 7B Team basketball game and they completed the season undefeated. The game was in San Angelo so we drove there to cheer her on. After the game was over she complained that her chest felt weird but rode the bus back with her teammates since it would be her last time to do so. When she arrived home that evening she complained a little but we just though maybe she got hit while playing and was just bruised and sore from that. Well, a day later we were sitting in the doctor's office with a crying child who had a constant stabbing pain in her chest. The doctor examined her but felt like it was something called Costochondritis (which is an inflammation of the cartilage in the breastbone). He felt that it stemmed from her having strep twice, the flu twice, and a virus twice all in an 8 week period during which time as soon as she recovered she went back to after school basketball practice and games once a week. The summation was that her body was just torn down and it settled in her chest. After performing an EKG, chest x-ray, and lab work with no other cause of the pain revealed he went with the normal protocol of a round of steroids along with a pain med to help her get comfortable and no physical activity. The doctor also confirmed that the pain feels like a heart attack and that most adults go to the ER because they think they are having a heart attack. That is comforting. I wish that this was the end of the post about this but it is not. The costochondritis was unrelenting and continued to interrupt Kaylee's sleep, strength mentally and physically, and was just draining. After making several trips back to our regular physician, having a CT scan, bone density scan, seeing a pain management doctor, and trying multiple pain meds we were finally referred to Cook's in Fort Worth after nothing showed up on any of the tests. Kaylee was on so many different pain meds at one point she started throwing up ( the Friday of Spring Break) and that is when we took her off all pain meds except Ibuprofen because nothing was even touching the pain. We also tried the chiropractor for adjustments, acupuncture, we tried reflexology, a second round of steroids and even Young Living oils all of which worked to get the pain down from a 10 on Kaylee's scale to a 9.5. During this time Kaylee was still going to school, crying a lot for her, and suffering from severe lack of sleep. Once we heard from Cook's and they could not get to us for 6-8 weeks we made the decision with her doctor's input to take Kaylee home bound. We determined that it was not helping her heal if she was not able to get rest, which if you only sleep 2 hours at night then attend school all day you are not resting. At the time we took her home bound she had been pushing through and made it through 6 weeks of school like this with all of us about to lose our minds. I have to say it was during those 6 weeks of seeing your child cry and beg you to stop that pain, along with them sleeping with you so I was not getting much sleep either, that I almost lost my mind completely. There were and continue to be a lot of prayers going up for Kaylee as well as all the other parents of children who deal with daily illness and pain as well as the children themselves.
The process of going home bound was a little frustrating but in the end my precious friend Alison, who teaches 7th grade Language Arts at Kaylee's school agreed to be her home bound teacher which was such a gift to us. I can never thank her enough for all the time, love, and time away from her family that she sacrificed for us during this time. She will always be an angel to us. Kaylee and I also had our share of friends who dropped of treats, came by to visit, or just called to check on us during this time. The visits from friends were such a nice surprise each time because it helped lift our spirits and break up the day. My Mom was a huge help too because she traveled from Waco each week to stay with Kaylee a few days so I could get errands run and connect with friends so as not to lose my mind totally. I love that I have a Mom who knows just what I need. She is a treasure and we love our Nana!
Finally, the day came for our Cook's appointment, a dear friend, James, met us that morning to pray before the appointment and anoint Kaylee with oil from the Holy Land, which was so precious to us. Our first appointment was with a pulmonologist, she was running extremely late and by the time she got to us there was only 15 minutes till our next appointment with a different doctor. Needless to say I felt robbed, extremely let down, and rushed after waiting 6 weeks for this appointment. The breathing test her office did showed Kaylee's lungs were fine, she felt the chostochondritis diagnosis was correct, and told Kaylee some stretches to do each day. Well, that was worth a couple of thousand dollars, not! Next we saw a cardiologist at Cook's who did a sonogram of her heart. He stated that everything looked good and his big advice was, " We all have pain in life and sometimes you just have to push through until it maybe goes away." I wanted to jump out of my chair and show him some pain he could learn to live with at that moment. Did he realize he was talking to a 13 year old child? Again, I paid how much for that advice? Needless to say we were all silent on the car ride back to Abilene. We had all prayed and been told by countless people that Cook's would have an answer and here we were driving home with no direction to go and no answer. Frustration did not begin to describe how we all felt.
Kaylee remained home bound the rest of the school year, it was so hard for her since she is my child who loves school, her teachers, and her friends.
Fast forward to today and the pain is usually around a 5-6, with an occasional flare-up. She is still taking two prescription meds each day along with Ibuprofen (3-4 tablets three times a day), trips to the chiropractor, and enzymes along with a change in diet. If you are reading this please continue to pray the pain is gone before school starts on August 24th. Kaylee has a lot of anxiety about school and athletics and handling the pain that might flare up.
Also if you read all this give yourself a pat on the back, I know i is a lot but I wanted to document our journey so I can praise God thoroughly when He takes the pain away. Blessings to you all!

Gymnastics Program

Well we made it another year in gymnastics! Campbell really enjoys going each week once we get there and I feel like her skills have really been refined this year with her sweet teachers.
These pictures were taken at her end of year program where she got to show us all she had learned. I cannot believe how tall she has gotten and how gracefully she completed her routines on the beam, bars and floor exercise. I love this sweet girl and her determination when she puts her mind to something.
Nana even made the trip from Waco to cheer our girl on.

Mother's Day

My sweet Husband and girls spoiled me on Mother's Day with beautiful flowers, a delicious meal I did not cook, and some gifts thanks to Kendra Scott.
I enjoyed spending the biggest part of the day with my family and then spent the late afternoon into evening with some of my dearest girlfriends at the movies. We actually saw two in one day...I don't know if that has ever happened. After the semester I have had taking care of my sick girl I needed some time away from the house to laugh and giggle. My precious family insisted I do so because they knew I needed it. My day was wonderful and I am so thankful to have a family who fills my cup and spoils me so. A Mother is the greatest gift in the world, I am so fortunate.

Lytle's Littles

Well this year Campbell got the opportunity to play volleyball with some of her sweet friends in the city league and she had a blast! (Despite the look on her face in this picture.)
She learned so much and I was so impressed with how quickly she picked up on the game. We may just have a volleyball player on our hands here.
One of their coaches was in college at ACU and also attends our church. She always gave them such encouragement and even had certificates for each of them at the end of the season. Campbell got one for the best underhand serve.
Here are Lytle's Littles after a practice with their sweet college coach Michelle.
Here are two group photos after our tournament. We may not have won many games but I guarantee that we had the most fun and the best attitudes. I will take that over a winning score any day!

Easter time

We were so glad that my parents came to celebrate Easter with us. Kaylee is still not feeling well from the costochondritis that we are battling so my Mom stayed home with her while the rest of the family went to church. It feels so weird to sit in the pew without her smiling face but we pray each day the Lord heals her quickly.
We enjoyed a table filled with so many of our favorite foods and a family Easter egg hunt in the backyard to end the festivities.
Campbell and Papa at the church Easter egg hunt on Saturday.
I love these two girls along with the faith they are developing each day in our Lord. My heart could just burst from the gratefulness I feel in being chosen to be their Mom.

I pray you all had a wonderful weekend celebrating our risen Savior and the gift of family.

Spring Break

Our Spring Break looked a little different than I had planned since Kaylee was not feeling well but we did manage to bust out of the house for small spurts of time when Kaylee was hurting a little less. Of course, Primetime for games with friends was first on the list.
We ended the week by welcoming our friends the Hanners home. Families from all over lined the street to their home and gave Hunter a heroes welcome home. There were signs, balloons, cheering, happy tears, and even a police escort. It was one of those experiences that we will remember the rest of our lives. I am so inspired and challenged by this family's faith every day. If you have not stumbled upon their blog you should because it is an incredible journey with God's footprints all over it.
Even though it was not the week we wanted or planned it ended up being amazing!

Exploding laughter

Thanks to some of our best friends having extra tickets we got to go see Bob Smiley and Tim Hawkins perform a comedy act tonight.
Saying they are both hilarious would be an understatement...I do not even have words to describe how hard I laughed. If you want a sample just look them up on YouTube. Do not look them up while anyone is sleeping or you have food/drink in your mouth because you will be laughing loudly.
By the time they finished my eyes were watering and my abs hurt from all the laughter. The thing I loved the most is that they are Christian comedians so the whole family can enjoy these two. Thank you to Tim Hawkins and Bob Smiley for a wonderful evening. We cannot wait to go again and we will have our children with us next time. If they come to your area please go get tickets, you will be so glad that you did.

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

These pictures show why I love winter so much!
It brings with it quiet moments making s'mores by the fire
Who can resist a little snow ice cream which tastes so much like the homemade kind but way easier.
Buried children in the snow giggling instead of arguing
 Snow angels...

Daddy coming home from work early for a family snowball fight.

We even let Oliver get in on the fun, he is great at hide and seek in the snow.
A blanket of snow covering the yard just makes me smile because I know a day off of school, routine, and business is about to take place. Thank you Lord for winter...we love it so here in Texas.

Daddy/Daughter Sock Hop

My precious friend Mendy puts together wonderful events during the year for our church families to take part in with their children. In February she put together a Father/Daughter Sock Hop and it was adorable. I had the pleasure of being able to help put some of the magic together before the guests arrived. The menu in Dad's Diner consisted of sodas, floats, hotdogs, hamburgers and french fries.
There was this cute backdrop for pictures.
 The entrance to Dad's Diner...
There were all kinds of games and activities like bowling, roller skating, dancing 50's style, hoola-hoops and many more.
All the kids had so much fun with their Dads and I had so much fun watching the looks on their faces as they took in all the experiences. I treasure the memories from all these events and the hearts and prayer that is poured into each one. Thank you Mendy!

Valentine's Date to Maroon 5

My sweet husband took me to see Maroon 5 for my Valentine's Day present. He must really love me because we have been to three Maroon 5 concerts in the past 2 years.
We had so much fun...well at least I did for sure.
Who could not have fun with Adam in the room?
I also got to hug my sweet friend Sarah's neck before the show started. We miss her so much in Abilene.
Thanks to my wonderful husband for making every day special and putting up with some of my obsessions. Love you!
